Two gray-white folding tables pressed together with a large two part dry erase board stretched across it with doodles and simple maps and indicators from the game. A blank character sheet sits to the side of an open tablet with the Space Aces cover visible.

When I first moved to RVA I left behind the steady cadre of board game and TTRPG nerds I had played with for years. I tried to start or join TTRPGs groups through Reddit and a couple of other places with mixed success, so I decided to take matters into my own hands. To that end, I started two local, monthly nerd events. Our TTRPG Days happen at the local library and run for 4 hours on the first Saturday of each month. Our Community Game Nights happen one Saturday evening a month for 3 hours and include a lot of other sorts of games in addition to TTRPGS.

That means I've had two one shot slots a month for the last 3 years. While we have dabbled and dipped into some familiar territory (D&D each Summer at the library and a few repeat visits to games like Monster of the Week and Brindlewood Bay), we have also played THIRTY-THREE new systems (and counting!). We've hit classics like Apocalypse World and Blades in the Dark. We've played silly lighter fare like Honey Heist and Space Aces. And we've done some deep dives into awesome genre games like Masks, Hearts of Wulin and Rapscallion.

Before I hop into some reviews I wanted to say a bit about the circumstances of our games. These experiences are specifically for one shots, with pick up groups of players of varying experience levels and ranging from 3-4 hours. Most of the time players are learning the game on the spot (and I've only had a few weeks to learn it and prepare the one shot).

This means we have sometimes skirted across the surface of systems, often missing out on downtime and campaign progression systems. I'll mention these as I come across them but I wanted to name that upfront.

This has been a super exciting journey and we're still going! We've got 5 more games this Spring and then we'll jump into our Summer schedule!
