Storytelling, Tabletop and Pop Culture
So this week we’re dropping a special bonus post to review the “Gods of Rega Collection” from Of Gods and Gamemasters. This 41 page collection is a sleek little portfolio containing a great big pantheon of deities (big in number, power and personality). It largely does what it says on the tin, it lays out the pantheon of Rega, a specific chunk of a pseudo historical fantasy world. You’ll see touches of Greco-Roman, Babylonian and Norse mythology all crashing together to create something that is both familiar fun and a novel experience of its own.
The birth of this world is recounted in a beautiful extended creation story, one clearly well versed in its real world parallels. The Gods of Rega are an embattled pantheon. Their ancient foe, the “children” of a primordial death and chaos deity, field both monsters and a vast evil empire to attack them and their people. The glimpses of the culture and peoples who live and move in this divinity filled world reveal a complex world with its own factions, traditions and culture to explore. Each of the 20 deities and demigods is a full blown character in their own right, a bold but nuanced NPC that actively engages the world according to their larger than life personality. They have their own motivations and moral compasses and even the Regan gods can stand in conflict with each other (and bring their followers and devotees with them!). And each deity has been helpfully laid out with their own iconography, relationships, history and religious practices. I think my favorites have to be the demigods. Each one a legendary figure from the history of the Regan peoples. There’s an imperial founder, a wise lawgiver and even a Herculean demigod king, complete with his own epic tale of trials that reshaped the history of the world. If this is the only part of this setting you engage with you already have an excellent resource. OGG has put together an excellent example of an active fantasy pantheon, perfect for running a mythic game. You could drop them in largely as they are and generate piles of hooks, quests and adventures around them. But you could also take them as a model and re-wire them for your own world (something OGG goes into detail on in his excellent YouTube videos). But what you really need to understand is that this is only a taste of an awesome new fantasy world. While the Gods of Rega are the heart of the setting, there is still plenty more to come, cultures, nations and all the crunchy TTRPG stat blocks to go with it. This is a preview, a window into something very, very cool coming down the pipes. I also wanna take a minute and talk about the author. Jack, the sole author and proprietor of Of Gods and Gamemasters, is a fantastic creative and a wonderfully supportive part of the TTRPG Twitter community. On any given day or night (when he’s not posting his own awesome content) you’ll find him liking, replying, retweeting and generally doing everything he can to boost others and build community. I highly recommend you check out Gods of Rega (it’s free right now!) but I insist that you go meet Jack. That’s all for now. Go grab a copy of the “Gods of Rega” and spend some time checking out the rest of OGG’s great content. You’ll find more gods, monsters and mythology and also great advice videos on how it was all built (and how you can build your own!).
